Campbell managed the ranch from 1886 to 1890 and under his supervision, the first improvements to the homestead were made. The original irrigation ditch was built and half of the 640-acre ranch was cleared and planted in figs and other fruit orchards, vineyards and fields of alfalfa. Hunt, a Democrat, became the Arizona's first Governor, serving a total of seven terms, though not in succession. Hunt lost his bid for re-election to his third term on November 7, 1916. Thomas Campbell was declared the winner by 30 votes; however, both men took the oath of office as Governor of Arizona on December 30, 1916.
